Orbetello

The mill on the Orbetello LagoonOrbetello is built upon a tiny strip of land confined between the Eastern and the Western lagoons, and is connected to Mt. Argentario promontory by an artificial dam. Only half a century ago it looked like an island, separated from the dry land by a ditch Fosso Regio.

The reason of the town's origin must be found in its privileged geographical position. In the past, Orbetello became in fact a big commercial and trading centre of the Thyrrenian and Mediterranean Sea, right before the expansion of the Roman military power of Cosa.

Life in town today is mostly lived in its historical centre, enclosed by the city walls. The Etruscan Walls are still well visible, but visitors today are welcomed by the Spanish Walls (1600), and enter through a door with three frames that maintains the Spanish style.

Orbetello - il DuomoOf particular interest: the Cathedral, probably built upon the ruins of an Etruscan temple, and renovated in 1375; Lungomare delle Crociere, a romantic promenade reminding the flights across the Atlantic in the thirties; La Rocca, built in the XII century probably by Pietro Farnese.
The core of Orbetello historic centre is Corso Italia, the main road and meeting point of its inhabitants.

In the surroundings of Orbetello can be found many spots of artistic and historical importance.

Like the ancient Roman city of Cosa, founded in 273 B.C. in the land that once belonged to the Etruscan village of Vulci.

Rocca of St. Biagio, south of AnsedoniaAnsedonia, a renowned tourist resort; Talamone, a charming village of fishermen located at the southern end of the Uccellina Mountains.
